The associations between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal outcomes such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cesarean delivery are well known, but adverse neonatal outcomes have been less consistently demonstrated. Investigators used French national data from 2012 to determine perinatal consequences of GDM in an observational cohort study that included separating GDM from previously unrecognized pregestational diabetes.
Among almost 800,000 deliveries after 22 weeks' gestation, prevalence of GDM was 7.2%, and prevalences of type 1 and type 2 diabetes were each 0.2%.
