Evaluation of the major duodenal papilla (MDP) is often difficult with a standard gastroscope. Investigators in Germany have evaluated the ability to locate and adequately inspect the MDP with a transparent cap attached to the end of a standard endoscope in 101 patients undergoing upper endoscopy.
All patients had two endoscopies performed by the same endoscopist, one with the standard gastroscope (S-EGD) and the other with a transparent cap attached to the end of the scope (CA-EGD). The patients were randomized as to which procedure was performed first. Images were reviewed by three blinded endoscopists who did not perform the procedures.
