Both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients are associated with longer stays, excess morbidity, and mortality. Inpatient diabetes teams are associated with improved glycemic control and clinical outcomes but require substantial resource utilization.
Using electronic medical records, researchers studied a “virtual glucose management service” (vGMS) at three acute care hospitals in San Francisco; 1-year analyses were conducted for pre-vGMS (2012), vGMS transition (2013), and vGMS (2014) periods.
