Improved efficacy in the initial treatment of patients with multiple myeloma has raised the possibility of eliminating the current standard of consolidation with high-dose melphalan and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT).
European investigators have now conducted an industry-sponsored, prospective, randomized phase III clinical trial involving 700 newly diagnosed myeloma patients (age, <65 years) who received triplet therapy with lenalidomide, bortezomib, and dexamethasone (RVD) for 3 cycles, followed by stem-cell mobilization and collection.
