Patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) who are chronically ill or unstable are likely to harbor antibiotic-resistant organisms. In a retrospective study involving two hospitals, investigators compared antibiotic susceptibilities of urinary E. coli strains isolated from discharged ED patients with those of isolates from admitted ED patients.
At both hospitals, likelihood of antibiotic susceptibility was higher among isolates from discharged ED patients than admitted ED patients. At the first hospital, 92% of antibiotics had higher rates of susceptibility in the discharged group. At the second hospital, 29% of antibiotics had higher rates of susceptibility in the discharged group.
