Small bowel biopsies are recommended in patients with celiac disease (CD) at 1 year after diagnosis. The value of such biopsies is unclear. Investigators in Finland performed a national cross-sectional study of patients with a CD diagnosis made at least 2 years prior to the study Patients were recruited through advertising and national celiac societies. Data were collected by chart review, interview, survey, and blood samples.
Of 760 patients, 516 (68%) were rebiopsied 1 year after initial diagnosis. Factors associated with having a second biopsy were severe disease at diagnosis; malabsorption; and concomitant Sjögren's syndrome or gastrointestinal disease, or musculoskeletal disease.
