The effects of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) have recently been examined in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer disease (AD) in several clinical trials. Although pilot studies had encouraging results, later clinical trials have shown negative results. The rationale for the use of this medication is that IVIg has anti-amyloid and immune modulatory properties in patients with AD.
In this phase 3, double-blind, partially manufacturer-funded trial, researchers randomized 390 individuals with mild-to-moderate AD to receive placebo (low-dose albumin) or IVIg administered at a dose of 0.2 or 0.4g/kg every 2 weeks for 18 months.
