A prior report showed that the annual incidence of 18 consistently reported infections in China decreased rapidly between 1970 and 2007 (Lancet 2008; 372:1598). Using data from the Chinese public health science center, investigators have now assessed the incidence and mortality for 45 notifiable infectious diseases from 2004 through 2013 in 31 mainland China provinces including a population of about 1.3 billion.
Results were as follows:
The overall annual incidence of infectious diseases increased from 2004 to 2009 and then leveled off; the highest annual incidences were reported for hand, foot, and mouth disease; hepatitis B; and tuberculosis.
