The mechanism of persistent immune activation despite long-term suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infection remains unclear. To better understand factors contributing to immune activation in that setting, investigators evaluated a cohort of HIV+ patients participating in a long-term AIDS Clinical Trials Group study who had HIV levels <50 copies/mL at 48 weeks after starting ART and at all subsequent time points, no ART interruptions, and paired plasma and peripheral mononuclear samples available from before and during ART. HIV levels, T-cell activation markers, and inflammatory biomarkers were measured pre-ART and at years 1, 4, and (if available) once during years 6 to 15 on treatment.
