Data are limited on the prevalence of autoimmune markers associated with celiac disease in China. To address this issue, investigators obtained samples from nearly 20,000 students aged 16 to 25 years entering two universities in China.
In all, 434 students (2%) were positive for a serologic marker associated with autoimmunity, broken down as follows:
Both immunoglobulin G antibodies against deamidated gliadin peptides (anti-DGP IgG) and immunoglobulin A antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG IgA): 11 (0.1%)
Anti-DGP IgG without selective IgA deficiency: 362 (2%)
Anti-tTG IgA only: 61 (0.4%)
Anti-DGP IgG: 373 (2%)
