Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication in patients with brain tumors. Treatment with anticoagulants is often associated with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), but the frequency of and risk factors for bleeding are uncertain.
To examine this issue, investigators conducted a matched, retrospective, cohort study with blinded radiology review involving 133 patients with high-grade gliomas and VTE who were given the anticoagulant enoxaparin (1 mg/kg twice daily). The PANWARDS score, which is weighted toward advanced age, poorly controlled blood pressure, and thrombocytopenia, was used to estimate the risk for ICH.
