The American Academy of Neurology publishes its first review of data to help practitioners provide guidance to patients about risk for sudden unexplained death in epilepsy.
Sponsoring Organization: American Academy of Neurology (AAN)Target Audience: Neurologists
Background and Objective
Epilepsy related-death, especially sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP), is a frightful subject. SUDEP is infrequent, but SUDEP risk typically is discussed with at least some degree of trepidation between patients, families, and care providers — balancing a need to inform versus invoking unnecessary, harmful fear and worry. This AAN practice guideline is based on a thorough systematic review of the literature, primarily prospective cohort studies (considered the highest levels of evidence), to address questions about SUDEP incidence and risk factors.
