Investigators in the U.K. and the Czech Republic analyzed factors related to nonadherence to antihypertensive treatment, as nonadherence is an important cause of suboptimal blood pressure control. They measured levels of prescribed blood pressure medications and metabolites in blood and urine to identify nonadherence.
In 676 U.K. patients, the rates of any, partial, and total nonadherence were 42%, 27%, and 14%, respectively; similar rates were identified among the 672 Czech Republic patients. Of the 2562 prescriptions made to these patients, 815 of the medications (32%) were not detected on urinalysis.
