Anticoagulation of patients with cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis (PVT) has been shown to lead to thrombosis regression and even resolution; however, bleeding risk is a concern in this population.
In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers assessed outcomes of anticoagulation in patients with cirrhosis and PVT. The primary outcome was recanalization and progression of PVT. Eight studies (5 retrospective, 2 prospective, 1 randomized, controlled trial) were included comprising 353 patients who were treated with low-weight heparin or warfarin or did not receive anticoagulation treatment.
