Race/Ethnicity plus Assisted Reproduction: Do Adverse Perinatal Outcomes Add Up?

Whether conceptions were spontaneous or assisted, black women were most likely to have unfavorable perinatal outcomes.

Preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) are more prevalent among black women than all other racial and ethnic groups. Pregnancies conceived with assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are also at higher risk for PTB and LBW — however, it's unclear whether racial and ethnic minority women who conceive with ART are at higher risk for pregnancy complications than would be conferred by either race/ethnicity or ART alone. Using state-level surveillance of births and ART in Florida, Massachusetts, and Michigan, investigators sought to answer this question.
