Vaxchora, a single dose, live attenuated oral cholera vaccine, was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2016 for prevention of infection caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 in travelers aged 18 to 64 years. It is the only cholera vaccine currently licensed in the U.S. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has now provided guidance on Vaxchora use.
In high-quality studies, estimated efficacy against an oral challenge was 90% at 10 days post-vaccination and 80% at 3 months post-vaccination. Protection after 3 months and booster efficacy are unknown. Diarrhea was slightly more common with vaccination than without (3.8% vs. 1.6%); no vaccine-related serious adverse events were reported.
