In countries where screening mammography is not readily available, breast cancers are more often self-detected. To assess factors predicting timing and staging at tumor presentation, investigators studied 113 women (mean age, 54) who underwent breast cancer surgery at a regional cancer hospital in Peru (mean travel time to hospital, 3 hours). Time to presentation was categorized as short (<90 days) or long (≥90 days) and tumor stage as early (stage 0, I, or II) or late (III or IV). History of clinical breast examination (CBE) was defined as report of a prior CBE by a health care professional that preceded development of the breast cancer and that did not lead to diagnosis of that cancer.
