Prevalence of difficult-to-treat, multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) is increasing, and colonization with such pathogens, once established, can persist for months and years. There has been a theoretical concern that healthcare personnel (HCP) with suboptimal hand hygiene caring for patients who are colonized or infected with MDRO may also become colonized and could potentially transmit these pathogens to other patients. Studies addressing this issue have so far been limited by small numbers and did not include HCP from U.S. institutions.
