Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) causes substantial long-term morbidity and higher mortality rates compared with the general population. Survivors are at increased risk for epilepsy, but the degree to which epilepsy contributes to excess mortality is unknown. To determine the prevalence of epilepsy and associated mortality in SAH survivors, researchers linked a long-standing, population-based registry of aneurysmal SAH patients in Eastern Finland with national medical and vital statistics. Epilepsy diagnosis was identified by national health insurance reimbursement for an antiepileptic drug (AED), which requires a neurologist to confirm the diagnosis.
