The perception that the prognosis after an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is poor can influence decisions about early care limitations and withdrawal of care, which in turn can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy of worse outcomes. Currently available prognostic models do not specifically account for this factor and therefore may be too pessimistic, particularly for more-severe hemorrhages.
To address this concern, researchers reviewed data from consecutive patients who presented to a single center with primary ICH and identified those with early (within 24 hours) care limitations.
