A substantial proportion of ischemic strokes are of unknown cause. The concept of “Embolic Stroke of Unknown Source” (ESUS) has gained increased acceptance recently. These authors examined whether the outlook for patients with an ESUS-type stroke is affected by age and sex. They compiled data from 11 stroke registries totaling 1095 patients (median age, 68 years; 41% women). Patients were divided by age (<60 years, 60–80 years, and >80 years). The authors evaluated the risk for recurrent stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and the mortality rate in the three age groups. They also analyzed outcome events in women versus men.
