Treatments for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome include splinting, local steroid injections, and surgery; local injection commonly is performed “blindly” (i.e., palpation-guided, using anatomic landmarks). In a previous study, blind injection for carpal tunnel syndrome conferred short-term improvement in symptoms, but, at 1 year, most patients had undergone surgery (NEJM Gen Med Nov 1 2013 and Ann Intern Med 2013; 159:309).
