Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is strongly associated with nicotine use disorder (NUD), and its presence (particularly hyperactivity-impulsivity [HI] symptoms) increases risk for poor outcomes with NUD treatment. However, studies rarely address ADHD as a moderator of NUD treatment outcome, and the mechanism for this influence is unknown. To learn more, researchers performed a secondary analysis of a randomized, placebo-controlled, 12-week, clinical trial of varenicline in 205 individuals.
On a validated self-report scale for ADHD symptoms, HI and inattention symptoms were in the subclinical range. All analytic models included nicotine dependence severity, depression, age, and sex as covariates.
