Severe hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with emergency department (ED) visits and serious complications. Researchers used a large California integrated healthcare system database (206,435 patients) to identify factors that predict high risk for hypoglycemic emergencies; the prediction tool was tested in two other healthcare system cohorts (≈1,400,000 patients total).
Among 156 potential clinical, demographic, and behavioral factors that were available in the electronic medical record, 6 factors were associated strongly with serious hypoglycemic events (ED visits and hypoglycemia-related hospitalizations) during 12 months. These factors were:
