A Hyperinflammatory Immune Response Is Associated with Secondary Infection After Sepsis

Patients with secondary infection after sepsis had increased plasma levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10.

Although research on sepsis has focused largely on early mortality, most deaths occur more than 1 week after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). It has been suggested that these relatively late deaths are due to sepsis-associated immune suppression that led to ICU-acquired secondary infections.

To address this issue, investigators performed an exploratory substudy of a prior prospective study (NEJM JW Infect Dis May 2016 and JAMA 2016; 315:146), in which they examined plasma biomarkers obtained during the first 4 days of admission among septic patients admitted to the ICU for >48 hours. Biomarkers were measured on admission and at day 2 and day 4 of ICU admission.
