Cytosponge for Histologic Response to Therapy in Eosinophilic Esophagitis

This alternative to repeat endoscopy and biopsies holds promise.

As symptoms do not consistently correlate with histologic response to treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), repeat endoscopy and biopsies are recommended following each therapeutic intervention (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Jun 2016 and Gastroenterology 2016; 150:581). This can be extremely costly and time-consuming, particularly for sequential reintroduction of food groups from the six-food exclusion diet, and therefore alternatives are sought.
