Up to 200 pediatric deaths attributable to influenza are reported in the U.S. every year, and the majority are in unvaccinated children. Last season, more than half the deaths occurred in children with no identified underlying high-risk condition. Hospitalization rates are highest in young children; preliminary data from last season show 41.4 hospitalizations per 100,000 children younger than 4 years.
