The latest examination of long-term outcomes after bariatric surgery is this single-center observational study from Utah. Researchers compared three groups of severely obese patients: 418 who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, 417 who sought bariatric surgery but didn't follow through because of lack of insurance coverage, and 321 who did not seek surgery. During 12 years of follow-up, 35% and 12% of the two nonsurgical groups, respectively, eventually underwent bariatric surgery.
At 12 years, outcomes in the three groups were as follows:
Adjusted mean weight loss was 35 kg, 3 kg, and 0 kg, respectively.
Among patients without diabetes at baseline, diabetes developed in 3% of the surgery group vs. 26% of the other two groups.
