Laparoscopic antireflux surgery (LARS) is one option for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients who seek an alternative to long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) and want a long-lasting “fix.”
In a population-based, retrospective cohort study in Sweden, researchers evaluated GERD recurrence in more than 2600 patients who underwent LARS (mean age, 51 years) during a 10-year period. Median follow-up was 6 years. Reflux recurrence was defined as performance of repeat LARS or receipt of a dispensed prescription for a PPI or histamine-2-receptor antagonist (H2RA) for at least a 6-month period.
