Survivors of a sepsis episode are frequently readmitted, often again for sepsis. However, little information has been available about whether such patients develop new infections or have a relapse of the previous process. To clarify this issue, researchers conducted a single-center, retrospective cohort study to analyze how often readmissions for recurrent sepsis were from the same pathogen and at the same infection site as during the initial episode.
Between May 2013 and May 2015, 472 patients were readmitted within 90 days of discharge from sepsis hospitalization. Of these, 137 (29%) were readmitted with sepsis; typically, these patients were male (57%) and elderly (mean age, 63 years) with comorbidities and were often immunocompromised.
