Physician Factors Associated with Better Adenoma Detection at Colonoscopy

ADRs were higher among women versus men, gastroenterologists versus nongastroenterologists, and early-career versus late-career physicians.

A higher adenoma detection rate (ADR) of the colonoscopist has been associated with reduced risk for interval cancer after colonoscopy. In the current study, researchers retrospectively examined physician factors associated with higher ADR in four diverse U.S. healthcare networks.

The study included some 200 physicians (82% men) performing at least 30 outpatient colonoscopies each – a total of over 100,000 procedures between October 2013 and September 2015.

Female physicians had a 4–percentage-point-higher ADR compared with male physicians, gastroenterologists had a 10-percentage-point-higher ADR compared with nongastroenterologists, and physicians in practice for ≤9 years had a 6-percentage-point-higher ADR compared with doctors in practice …
