It is well known that the placement of a covered self-expanding metal stent (CSEMS) in the bile duct of a patient with an intact gallbladder might increase the risk for cholecystitis, likely due to occlusion of the cystic duct. Still, CSEMSs are among the most widely used devices in biliary endoscopy given their removability and utility in treating benign and malignant strictures as well as biliary leaks and fistulas.
