Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine Efficacious in Human Infection Model

Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine was immunogenic, safe, and efficacious in preventing typhoid fever in a human challenge study.

Typhoid fever remains widespread in areas that lack adequate clean water and sanitation. Increasing antimicrobial resistance limits treatment choices. Currently licensed vaccines are ineffective or unsuitable for young children, a high-risk population. Researchers conducted a randomized, controlled 2b trial of Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (Vi-TT) using a human infection model. The researchers randomized 112 healthy U.K. adult volunteers (1:1:1) to receive a single dose of Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate (Vi-TT), Vi-polysaccharide (Vi-PS; TYPHIM Vi) or meningococcal ACWY conjugate (control) vaccine.
