Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a proposed alternative to resuscitative thoracotomy for patients without major intrathoracic injury. These authors report the University of Maryland's experience over 4 years of using REBOA.
From February 2013 to January 2017, 90 patients had REBOA performed for traumatic arrest (n=50), severe traumatic hemorrhage (n=29), or nontraumatic hemorrhage (n=11). Patients with penetrating thoracic trauma were not treated with REBOA, undergoing resuscitative thoracotomy instead. Major intrathoracic injury was excluded by ultrasound and x-ray.
