Hypertension increases dementia risk (NEJM Journal Watch Neurol Oct 2017 and Lancet Jul 19 2017; [e-pub]). Researchers investigated whether hypertension in early adulthood (mean age, 33 years) or midadulthood (mean age, 44 years) is associated with incident dementia in both or either sex. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure of ≥140/90 mm Hg. Dementia diagnoses were determined by inpatient and outpatient International Classification of Disorders, 9th edition, codes for participants from an integrated healthcare delivery system with data from early adulthood through later life.
Among 5646 individuals, 55% were female and 22% were hypertensive at initial assessment, and 2078 either died or lapsed membership of the health care system. Dem…
