To assess whether an increase in U.S. suicide attempts has paralleled the approximately 2% yearly increase in suicide (from 11/100,000 to 13/100,000), researchers analyzed data from national household interview studies of 34,629 adults in 2004 to 2005 and 34,712 in 2012 to 2013 (overall mean age, 48).
Over the study period, the adjusted suicide rate increased from 0.62% to 0.79%. Recent suicide attempts (i.e., within the previous 3 years) increased the most during the study in younger, less educated adults with lower family income and in those with antisocial personality disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or a history of violence.
