The White House revised the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) in 2015 and set new 5-year target goals, including diagnosing 90% of infected individuals and achieving viral suppression (VS) in 80% of these. Using a microsimulation model, researchers have now examined the clinical and economic impact of reaching NHAS goals versus continuing with the “current pace” of diagnosis, linkage, and VS. They reported outcomes for all HIV-infected persons in the U.S. and for a high-risk subset: black men who have sex with men (MSM).
If NHAS goals are achieved by 2020, the modelling results showed that in the subsequent 20 years 280,000 transmissions and 200,000 deaths would be averted, saving more than 2.1 million years of life at an additional cost of …
