Most tuberculosis cases in the U.S. occur among immigrants, and screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is recommended. To examine the benefits among subgroups with medical comorbidities, researchers modelled outcomes and cost-effectiveness associated with LTBI testing strategies among non-U.S.-born residents.
Non-U.S.-born residents were divided into four populations: no comorbidities, diabetes, HIV, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Five testing strategies were modelled: no testing, tuberculin skin test (TST), interferon gamma release assay (IGRA), confirm positive (positive TST confirmed with IGRA), and confirm negative (negative IGRA confirmed with TST). LTBI was treated with 3 months of rifapentine and isoniazid.
