Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist that increases platelet production and decreases the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP; NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Jan 2008 and N Engl J Med 2007; 357:2227 and 2237).
To evaluate its long-term safety and effectiveness for patients with chronic ITP, investigators conducted an industry-sponsored, open label, phase III extension study involving 299 patients who had participated in previous eltrombopag trials. Daily oral doses were titrated to achieve and maintain platelet counts ≥50×109/L.
Results were as follows:
52% of patients achieved continuous platelet counts ≥50×109/L for ≥25 weeks; 69% achieved continuous platelet counts ≥30×109/L for ≥25 weeks.…
