Yellow fever (YF) outbreaks continue to erupt in South America and Africa, despite the availability of a highly effective vaccine. YF infection is confirmed by detection of virus RNA in the blood and recently by detection in urine (J Clin Microbiol Nov 2017; 55:3294).
Investigators now present a case report of YF virus detection in the urine and semen of a 65-year-old man unvaccinated against YF who developed acute YF and associated severe thrombocytopenia during a recent outbreak in Brazil, in which 792 confirmed cases and 274 deaths were identified as of July 2017.
