To assess whether serum lactic acid levels can help in the diagnosis of intussusception, investigators enrolled a prospective convenience sample of children aged 6 months to 6 years who were referred for abdominal ultrasonography for suspected intussusception at a tertiary care children's hospital from 2011 to 2013. Patients were excluded if they had renal disease, blunt abdominal trauma in the previous 2 weeks, diabetes, ventriculoperitoneal shunt, seizure disorder, hepatic disease, history of abdominal surgery in the last 6 months, or metabolic disorder. Blood was obtained for lactic acid testing before patients underwent ultrasonography.
