In the RE-LY trial, a large randomized, controlled study of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF), 150 mg of dabigatran was superior to warfarin in systolic embolism and hemorrhagic stroke and equivalent in major bleeding (NEJM JW Cardiol Oct 2009 and N Engl J Med 2009; 361:1139). However, subsequent meta-analyses raised questions about dabigatran-linked risks for myocardial infarction (MI) and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. The current researchers analyzed data from the FDA's Sentinel network for a real-world view of 25,289 dabigatran patients who were propensity-score–matched with 25,289 warfarin patients.
