To determine the accuracy of self-assessed competency in colonoscopy, investigators asked 20 novice (<50 previous colonoscopies), 10 intermediate (50–500 colonoscopies), and 10 experienced (>1000 colonoscopies) endoscopists to perform a colonoscopy and assess their performance. Performance was graded by the participants and by blinded experts viewing video recordings using the GiECAT score — a global rating scale that measures technical skills, strategies for instrument advancement, mucosal visualization, independent procedure completion, procedure knowledge, interpretation and management of findings, and maintenance of patient safety, as well as an endoscopy checklist evaluating 19 pre-, intra-, and postprocedure steps.
