Nocardia species are Gram-positive branching rods that can cause severe infections, particularly in patients with compromised cell-mediated innate immunity. Most commonly, infections involve the lungs, skin, central nervous system (CNS), or multiple sites. More orally administered antimicrobials with activity against Nocardia spp. are needed. Current treatment relies heavily on trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and linezolid.
