In 2016, the Sepsis-3 Task Force updated their recommendations and removed the systemic inflammatory response system (SIRS) criteria. Instead, sepsis was defined by an increase by ≥2 points in the sequential (sepsis-related) organ failure assessment (SOFA) tool. The task force introduced a Sepsis-3 flowsheet that employs the quick SOFA (qSOFA), which uses respiratory rate, blood pressure, and mental status to generate a score.
