Hemostatic powder sprayed through a catheter has been shown to have good short-term effectiveness in achieving hemostasis in gastrointestinal bleeding, but it has not received FDA approval. Now, investigators have retrospectively assessed rebleeding risk and 6-month survival in approximately 100 patients with bleeding of malignant gastrointestinal tumors treated with hemostatic powder (Tc-325) at two hospitals in Canada and Thailand. Results were as follows:
Tumor oozing was the predominant endoscopic finding (94%).
Hemostatic powder was used as the first endoscopic therapy in 88% of patients and after failure of other therapies in 12%.
Immediate hemostasis was achieved in 99.7%, and rebleeding rates were 15%, 7%, 8%, and 2% at 72 hours, 7 day…
