Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of HIV acquisition is highly effective with proper use. Guidance for clinicians to identify those who may benefit from PrEP include the CDC PrEP guidelines for men who have sex with men (MSM), the HIV Incidence Risk Index for MSM (HIRI-MSM), and the Gilead package insert for Truvada. (The HIRI-MSM guideline generates a score based on additional demographic and behavioral factors, while the Gilead guidelines incorporate the prevalence of HIV in social networks or in the community.)
