The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that rotavirus vaccine be administered to premature infants, who are at elevated risk for severe disease, at their appropriate chronological age. Because many premature infants have long hospital stays, they may miss this opportunity for protection unless rotavirus vaccine is administered during their hospital stay. Concerns about nosocomial spread of live virus has limited the use of rotavirus vaccine in hospitalized infants, leaving some high-risk infants unprotected.
