Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with numerous comorbid psychiatric disorders in men and women. In a cross-sectional study of individuals born in Norway between 1967 and 1997, investigators linked data from four national registries to examine comorbidity patterns for six psychiatric disorders in 40,100 individuals diagnosed with ADHD (44% women; mean age, 31) and 1,660,000 controls without ADHD diagnoses (49% women; mean age, 33).
More parents of those with ADHD had psychiatric disorders than parents of controls (mothers, 27% vs. 13%; fathers, 17% vs. 10%). Having at least one psychiatric disorder was more common among the ADHD group than the comparison group (women, 54% vs. 14%; men, 48% vs. 9%).
