Although risk factors for progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children are known, we lack a model for predicting the time to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) when renal replacement therapy is required.
In a retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the accuracy of the four-variable and eight-variable kidney failure risk equations (KFREs; previously validated in adults) in predicting 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year risks for progression to ESRD in 603 children (median age, 12 years) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73m2 (median, 44/mL/min/1.73m2).
